Common errors detected when calibrating pressure instruments and how to solve them

  1. Zero offset (offset)

Error: The needle does not return exactly to zero without pressure applied.
Causes: Shocks, vibration, overpressure or deformation of the Bourdon tube.
Solution:

  • Perform internal adjustment of the mechanism (when the pressure gauge design allows it).
  • If the instrument is scratched or the damage is permanent, it must be replaced.
  • Install shock absorbers, restrictors or glycerin to reduce future vibrations.
  1. Unstable readings or with marked hysteresis

Error: The instrument marks very different values in ascent and descent.
Causes: Internal wear, dirt, deformation or friction in the mechanism.
Solution:

  • Cleaning and internal adjustment if the design allows access.
  • For wear damage, it is recommended to replace the instrument.
  • Avoid overpressures and vibrations in operation.
  1. Poor selection of the instrument range

Error: The pressure gauge constantly operates near full scale.
Causes: Incorrect selection at the time of purchase or installation.
Solution:

  • Select equipment whose normal operating range is maximum 50–75% of its scale.
  • Change the instrument for one with a range appropriate to the process.
  • Evaluate if the system requires additional protection (snubbers, relief valves).
  1. Connections or accessories in poor condition

Error: Leaks, damaged threads, worn adapters or inappropriate connections.
Causes: Incorrect assembly, corrosion, excessive use or non-standard adapters.
Solution:

  • Replace worn or damaged accessories.
  • Use compatible connections with the appropriate thread.
  • Apply correct torque and proper sealing (where applicable).
  • Avoid improvisations such as reductions or bushings not designed for pressure.
  1. Damage due to overpressure

Error: Deformation of the Bourdon tube, loss of linearity or irreversible damage.
Causes: Water hammer, unexpected pressure peaks, valves accidentally closed.
Solution:

  • In most cases: replacement of the instrument (irreversible damage).
  • Install overpressure protectors, relief valves or restrictors.
  • Train the operator to avoid pressure shocks due to sudden openings.
  1. Manual adjustments or improper manipulation

Error: Adjusting the pointer “by hand” to try to correct the reading.
Causes: Empirical manipulation without technical knowledge.
Solution:

  • Perform actual calibration with standard and adjust only with the appropriate method.
  • Instruct staff: moving the needle by hand never corrects the actual error.
  • In case of severe mechanical imbalance, replace the instrument.
