What is ASME certification?
The ASME standard establishes technical standards and codes for the design, manufacture and maintenance of mechanical equipment, including boilers, piping, pressure containers and other systems. These standards guarantee the safety, efficiency and quality of industrial products globally. The section text-strikethrough-none”> focuses on pressure vessels and piping systems used to transport fluids under pressure. Stipulates the design, construction, inspection and testing requirements for this equipment, in order to ensure your safety in operation. It also covers aspects such as permitted materials, welding procedures and structural integrity criteria to prevent failures in extreme conditions.
What does ASME certification for rupture discs consist of?
There are many provisions of this standard that apply to rupture discs. Some are recommendations, others are mandatory according to the standard and others are technical guides such as sizing methodologies.
Rupture discs must undergo extensive performance tests related to burst accuracy and flow and only after these have been met can the product be offered commercially in accordance with ASME.
Likewise, rupture disc suppliers must be recertified every 3 years and product certifications must be renewed every 6 years for the manufacturer can continue to supply ASME compliant products.
Why do ASME discs cost more?
All rupture discs are custom made; Fike uses destructive testing to determine when a particular disc meets the customer’s exact specifications and additionally, Fike is subject to more stringent accuracy requirements than those stipulated by the Code in order to guarantee 100% quality and accuracy in its rupture discs.
Tests are performed on discs that have the same description, manufactured by the same operator, using the same material and manufactured to the same specifications and at the same time (Exact definition of a batch number), so representative tests truly reflect the expected performance of the product being shipped to a customer.
